3 Tips for SPM Leavers: Overcoming Poor English Challenges for a Blissful College Journey

Congratulations! You have just completed high school. I could totally feel the excitement overflowing in you right now. How much I wish I could give you a huge high 5. Still, remember those nights trying to memorise historical dates for SPM exams? They are finally over. What a relief! Right now you would probably be trying to figure out your next step in life. How do I know that? I was once a young guy too. Not planning to tell you when was my SPM or else you will be busy trying to guess my age. Just joking, it was 8 years ago and yes together we are young.  Well, 8 years ago after getting my SPM results, my plan was to further my studies into college. However, I was so worried that I could not keep up with the “English standard” at college. Therefore, in this article, I will be sharing the most commonly faced English challenges in college alongside with a couple of tips in order for you to go through college blissfully. I hope you can all learn and be better than the average “English Standard” at college.

1. Getting The Most From Lecturers

Unlike high schools, most colleges are using English as a medium for the teaching and learning process. Therefore, it is very important for you to get used to listening to English in order for you to get a whole picture of the lecture class. Not understanding what the lecturer is trying to say is deadly as you will be totally lost in the class. Do your preparations now, try listening to some podcast or English songs to get used to different pronunciations by different people. Do check out my previous article on how you can use songs to learn English if you haven’t already.

2. Academic Writing And Thesis Writing

Understanding theory and the ability to put them in words is a completely different story. I have seen a lot of people who are very good at understanding a particular topic. However, when it comes to expressing those understanding out in words, they were stuck. You see, academic writing and thesis writing is not any ordinary writing. The writing needs to be precise besides being grammar free. I would highly encourage you to read more articles online. It can be any articles that you are interested in just so you can improve on your flow and precision. If you are worried about your grammar, you can refer back to my article on, what are the 5 grammar errors that will instantly ruin your writing credibility.

3. Presentations

I believe some of you are already sweating and shaking when you see this word. You would probably also be imagining the stage, the audience, and also worrying about what to say. That is absolutely normal. But, have you actually put serious thought on this before? What are you actually afraid of? I believe your main fear is actually your own language. You are afraid that people might laugh at your poor English. I used to be like that too. I was so afraid to speak publicly as my English is not that good when I was little. The one thing that I did was to do a constant rehearsal. Repeat what you have to say aloud in front of the mirror until you no longer need to refer to a paper. From there, you can now try to rehearse in front of your family and friends. You will realise that your presentation skills have greatly improved in no time.
